Riffleman 117thBob was only 18 years old when he landed at Normandy. He was immediately sent to St. Lo to fight in Operation Cobra. He recalls watching helplessly as hundreds of his own men were bombed and killed by Allied planes. He feared every river crossing as he could not swim, but figured he would not survive all the combat anyway. As squad leader, he made it all the way to Magdeberg, Germany, where the war ended for the 30th. He received 5 battle stars and was miraculously never wounded. |
