ABBOTT WEATHERLY![]() Abbot served as an officer and Battery Commander during the war. At the battle of Mortain his big guns dealt a heavy blow to German forces. He credits the Forward Observers and their ability to spot and call for accurate artillery, for saving the men who were cut-off and surrounded, on Hill 314. He helped improvise "medical" shells loaded with medical supplies fired into their positions, to treat the wounded. During the six day German attack he sometimes kept his guns firing 24/7, placing a ring of fire around Hill 314. Mr. Weatherly received 3 Bronze Stars for his actions. |
