At 19 years old, Franklin W. Denius, a forward observer, suddenly found his battalion surrounded a top Hill 314, below approximately 70,000 German troops and 4 Panzer divisions. Frank now recalls how the German troops hit the 30th infantry division. Although surrounded by larger German forces and suffering heavy causalities his battalion managed to survive for 6 days. He accredits their survival to "good training," and "accurate artillery" that kept the German forces at bay. A highly decorated veteran Frank calmly declares " we were just doing our jobs."
