It was 1944 and a young boys life was changed forever! "The Germans invaded Holland and that was it, we were at war with the Germans and prior to that these people were our friends." Meet Hubert "Jerry" Gerards, born in Kerkrade, Holland. Jerry was a young boy when war broke out. He smuggled hidden messages in his school books during the German occupation. At wars end he became a US citizen when two 30th Infantry soldiers befriended him. He still harbors terrible memories of war & destruction, and recalls how Nazi Troops shelled his family & civilians as they evacuated the city. This compelling story carries us back to his homeland & the neighborhood where he grew-up & once played with German children. Solemnly he tells us: "somehow we survived off my mothers small garden, hidden in the back yard."
